Other Stuff: SAE Sketchclub - Online Workshop
The SAE sketch club is a regular online event. This is the first time I had attended. The event is aimed at people in the gaming industry, however, everyone is welcome. It was useful to me as game production and architecture have a lot of crossover skills.
This session was based on storyboarding. The host led us through the process of creating a hands Bartsch style storyboard. The host himself led the group in an ad hoc way. Using his skills to give advice and research the subject. This was a great learning experience, as we got to see his process. It was also a great discussion generator.
The storyboard itself was meant to be a quick piece, which could be shown to a colleague to explain a narrative, i.e. in a meeting. The idea was that the task was light and fun, but also meaningful. The host created a four-box storyboard and didn’t use reference photos. Because of the ad hoc nature of the sketch group my storyboard was created slightly differently. I realised after the first initial sketch that reference photos were needed to improve the quality of my people (see bibliography below). Elements were taken from reference photos and other parts from imagination. The host’s people drawing skills also helped me improve on my people drawing. Architects don’t normally draw fully formed people, just indications of how a person might inhabit a space.
The group picked the start of a movie where someone fell off a ship storyboard. I haven’t seen the movie before, but a few of the members hadn’t and we just made it up as we went along. Picking a story for the storyboard was more about having constraints which focus us on the task.

Some pictures were a lot more successful than others. I had added tone to my sketches as I went along. I found out later that it would have been better to do it at the end. I feel that it defiantly would have been quicker. Appling Hans Bacher's use of simplified tones was effective throughout. I experimented with using just one brush size (photoshop), as I felt it would give the piece consistency. Smaller brush sizes would have been more appropriate for different pictures. I believe the skills learnt in this session will help me create better cereal views.
